Took a trip with a few friends to Merrick State Park in mid-August and had an absolute ball! We were at Campsite 49 on the Island. This campsite was large enough for three 2-person tents and a picnic table topper. It had a stunning view (right on the river) while still having some privacy and protection with many trees and bushes covering the river as well. The site was secluded enough that we couldn't see our neighbors, but not enough so that you couldn't hear them (which was fine!). We brough a canoe which we launched from our campsite (right across from the canoe trail) and hung a hammock above the rocks by the river bank overlooking the river. It was gorgeous. The biggest downside to the island campsites is that there are a few port-a-potties that were absolutely disgusting. To find a decent bathroom, it was quite the hike or a drive to the North Campground. Would highly recommend this state park if you have a canoe or desire to fish. There are virtually no hiking paths. We spent on of our two days camping going tubing on the Trempeleau River! Would go again and stay on the Island!

We just love this little campground! It is not fancy, but rather basic, nicely kept, QUIET, and the staff is friendly. There are two loops - one with electricity and where the showers and toilets (clean), camp host and firewood ($5, I think) are located. The other loop is without electricity, just valt toilets (smelly, but kept as clean as they can be kept... & hand sanitizer provided), but beautifully BY THE RIVER!! We place our tent there, enjoy watching the river and its traffic, and the birds of course. Sometimes we've seen deer and turtles, and heard owls. We can easily drive to the other loop and have our daily showers there. Just take a canister along, so you have access to driking water & for washing hands and dishes at your campsite. We would not book a campsite which is in the second half of the southern loop as it is in between of a marsh/bond and woods. However, other than public holidays, there seems to be plenty of nice riverside campsites available! We highly recommend the place and plan to be back regularly ourselves! Quiet and relaxing! Oh yeah... except the rail line... trains will wake you up the first night! The next, you'll sleep well :) Ear blugs recommended. This place seems to be very popular with fishermen with their boats. Some come just for the day, some stay.
